Direct Thermal Material
In contrast to 'normal' paper, direct thermal paper is made up of several layers. These extra layers give the paper material the possibility to print without ink.
These layers consist of:
- A top coating/thermal layer in the face of the paper
- Silicone Glue
- Liner (backing)
Function
The top coating of the thermal paper contains a special type of dye. This dye is activated with heat typically from the printhead from a thermal printer. This enables text to be print without the need for ink. Note: it is only possible for text to be printed in black with direct thermal labels.
Types of thermal paper
There are two variations of direct thermal material. Thermal Eco and Thermal Top. Both types are recyclable and have a shelf life of 1 year when stored in temperatures of 20-22°C in a dark environment. Both types are available with permanent, removable, and freezer-suitable adhesives. Exposure to direct lighting is not recommended.
Thermal Eco- Ideal for general purposes. Often used in dry and reasonably clean environments for short-term labeling applications. Non-top coated; not protected against UV light, moisture, fats and alcohol.
Thermal Top– Ideal for printing product information that requires extra protection against external environmental influences. Top coating provides extra protection from both top and bottom of the material. Protects against UV light, moisture, grease, oil, and alcohol. These labels are often used in applications where a longer life required.
